ever since my dear, v-necked, off-white cardigan began to get pilly, my mother urged me to throw it away and get a new one. i resisted, saying i would when i had one on hand to replace it. i never found one, however, but, several years later, i too reached a state of acceptance. i gave the sweater to my mother this christmas so she could destroy it as she so chose.
